In the summer of 2021, 22-year-old Gabrielle "Gabby" Petito and her 23-year-old fiance Brian Laundrie embarked on a cross-country road trip in Petito's converted Ford Transit van, documenting their travels on social media as part of a "van life" journey across the western United States [1] [2].
On August 12, 2021, Moab, Utah, police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving the couple. A witness reported seeing a man slapping a woman near their van [1]. Body camera footage from the responding officers showed Petito visibly distressed and crying, with a cut on her cheek. Officers spoke with both Petito and Laundrie at the scene [3]. An independent review later found that the Moab officers made "several unintentional mistakes" during this encounter, and a subsequent lawsuit alleged that they treated Laundrie as the victim rather than the aggressor [4]. The officers separated the couple for the night but did not issue any charges, allowing them to continue their road trip [3].
On September 1, 2021, Laundrie returned alone to his parents' home in North Port, Florida, driving Petito's van [2]. For more than a week, neither Laundrie nor his family communicated with Petito's family about her whereabouts. On September 11, Petito's mother reported her missing to authorities after being unable to reach her daughter [2] [5].
The case quickly drew intense national media attention and widespread public engagement on social media. Laundrie, through his family's attorney, declined to speak with investigators [2]. According to his parents, Laundrie left their home on September 14 with a backpack, telling them he was going to a nearby nature preserve. His parents reported this to police on September 17 [2].
On September 19, 2021, the FBI announced that human remains consistent with Petito's description had been found in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area within the Bridger-Teton National Forest near Jackson, Wyoming [1] [2]. The Teton County coroner initially determined the manner of death to be homicide. On October 12, Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue announced that the official cause of death was "manual strangulation/throttling," and that Petito had died approximately three to four weeks before her body was discovered [5].
Meanwhile, a massive search for Laundrie was underway in the Carlton Reserve and surrounding areas in Sarasota County, Florida. On October 20, 2021, the FBI located partial human remains, along with personal items belonging to Laundrie, in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, an area adjacent to the Carlton Reserve that had previously been submerged in water [1] [2]. Laundrie's remains were identified through dental records, and his cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head [2] [6].
Among the items recovered near Laundrie's remains was a notebook in which he wrote statements claiming responsibility for Petito's death [6]. On January 21, 2022, the FBI's Denver Field Office announced the closure of the investigation, stating: "All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case. The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito" [6].
The case prompted widespread public discussion about domestic violence awareness, disparities in media coverage of missing persons cases, and the adequacy of police responses to domestic disturbance calls [1]. The heightened public interest in the search for Petito and Laundrie also led to the discovery of the remains of several other missing persons in unrelated cases [1]. In February 2025, Netflix released a docuseries titled "American Murder: Gabby Petito" examining the case [1].
On August 12, 2021, Moab City Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a man had been seen slapping a woman near a white van. Officers made contact with Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie and conducted a roadside investigation [1]. Body camera footage showed Petito crying and visibly distressed, with a cut on her face. The officers separated the couple for the night but made no arrests [1] [2]. An independent review later concluded that the Moab officers made "several unintentional mistakes" during the encounter, including failing to properly investigate the incident as a potential domestic violence situation [3].
The FBI's Denver Field Office led the federal investigation into Petito's disappearance and death. On September 19, 2021, agents announced the discovery of remains consistent with Petito's description in Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming [3]. On October 12, the Teton County Coroner ruled her death a homicide caused by manual strangulation [3]. Following the discovery of Laundrie's remains and notebook on October 20, 2021, the FBI formally closed the case on January 21, 2022, stating that "the investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito" [4].
The Petito family brought a wrongful death claim against Brian Laundrie's estate. On November 17, 2022, a Florida judge ruled in favor of the Petito family and awarded $3 million in damages to Nichole Schmidt, Petito's mother and the administrator of her estate [5]. The family indicated that proceeds would benefit the Gabby Petito Foundation.
Petito's parents also filed a civil lawsuit against Brian Laundrie's parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, alleging that they knew their son had killed Petito and intentionally withheld information while Petito was still missing. Court documents revealed that Laundrie's parents acknowledged their son told them Petito was "gone" and that he needed legal representation during a phone call on August 29, 2021 [6]. On February 21, 2024, the two families reached a confidential settlement, avoiding a trial that had been scheduled for May 2024. The Laundrie family's attorney stated they "look forward to putting this matter behind us" [6].
In August 2022, Petito's family filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Moab City Police Department, alleging that officers failed to follow Utah's domestic violence laws during the August 12, 2021, traffic stop and that their negligence contributed to Petito's death [2]. The family filed an amended complaint in 2023, alleging that Officer Eric Pratt acknowledged he believed Laundrie "seemed like a mental and emotional bully" but did not act on that assessment [1].
On November 20, 2024, Utah District Court Judge Don Torgerson dismissed the lawsuit, citing the state's Governmental Immunity Act. The judge acknowledged that the plaintiffs had met the standard required to show that the officers' conduct could potentially have been a contributing cause of Petito's death, but ruled that governmental immunity shielded the department from liability [7]. The Petito family's attorney argued the immunity statute is unconstitutional, and the family appealed the dismissal. As of early 2026, the Utah Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments in the case [3] [7].
November 1, 2023
The Petito family settled their civil lawsuit against the City of North Port, Florida, for .5 million. The lawsuit alleged North Port police failed to conduct a welfare check when Laundrie returned home alone without Gabby and refused to cooperate with investigators.

Ratcliffe, who was assigned by the city to review the incident, said he could not speculate on whether different actions by the officers in August could have prevented Petito’s death. “Would Gabby be alive today if this case was handled differently?

Gabby Petito's funeral set for Sunday; Brian Laundrie manhunt to continue in Florida wetlands
The indictment released Thursday by the U.S. District of Wyoming also charges Laundrie with unauthorized access of a device and says he used the bank accounts without permission from about Aug.
How Dog The Bounty Hunter May Be Hindering The Brian Laundrie Manhunt And Possible Future Trial
The laws behind tampering with evidence imply an intent to change the outcome of a court ruling — and it must be proved — so while Dog might not be charged with that crime, he could still be hurting the investigation by messing with the crime scene. If he spreads his DNA, accidentally covers tracks or any hints that Laundrie was there at all, it could hurt what the FBI might have uncovered.
