Dee Dee Blanchard, Dee Dee Blanchard
Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a victim of years of Munchausen syndrome by proxy abuse at the hands of her mother Clauddine 'Dee Dee' Blanchard, conspired with her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder Dee Dee in their Springfield, Missouri home on June 10, 2015. The killing was discovered days later after alarming Facebook posts from Dee Dee's account. Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was paroled on December 28, 2023, after serving approximately eight years. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in November 2018 and sentenced to life without parole.
For most of her life, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was believed by neighbors, charities, and medical professionals to be a gravely ill young woman confined to a wheelchair, suffering from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and a host of other serious conditions. Her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, presented herself as a devoted caregiver, shaving her daughter's head to simulate the effects of chemotherapy, administering unnecessary medications, and subjecting Gypsy to feeding tubes and surgeries she did not need [1][2]. In reality, Gypsy could walk, was not terminally ill, and had been the victim of a severe and prolonged form of child abuse known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy -- now formally termed factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA) [1][3].
Dee Dee's deception was elaborate and deeply entrenched. After Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, Dee Dee claimed that Gypsy's medical records had been destroyed in the flooding, which allowed her to fabricate a new medical history when the family relocated from Louisiana to Springfield, Missouri [1][4]. In Springfield, the Blanchards received a Habitat for Humanity home and drew on the generosity of neighbors and charitable organizations who believed Gypsy was critically ill [3]. A 2001 muscle biopsy had already proven Gypsy did not have muscular dystrophy, yet Dee Dee continued to present this diagnosis to new doctors [2]. A physician noted as early as 2007 that "there is a strong possibility of Munchausen by proxy," but Dee Dee simply changed providers and continued the charade [3].
Gypsy later described years of isolation, physical restraint, and control. Dee Dee beat her, chained her to a bed, and restricted her contact with the outside world [4]. Despite this, Gypsy secretly gained access to the internet and, around 2012, met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website. She maintained contact with him through a secret Facebook account under the alias "Emma Rose" [2]. The two developed a romantic relationship conducted largely online, and over time, they began to discuss a plan to escape Dee Dee's control -- a plan that ultimately became a murder plot [2][5].
On the night of June 10, 2015, Godejohn traveled from his home in Wisconsin to Springfield, Missouri. Gypsy let him into the house and provided him with a knife, duct tape, and gloves. While Gypsy hid in the bathroom, Godejohn entered Dee Dee's bedroom and stabbed her 17 times as she slept [1][5]. The couple then stole cash from the house and fled to Godejohn's home in Wisconsin by bus [6].
The crime was discovered several days later, on June 14, 2015, when a series of alarming posts appeared on Dee Dee's Facebook account. One message read, "That bitch is dead" [2][3]. Concerned neighbors who saw the posts contacted police, who discovered Dee Dee's body in her bed. Gypsy and Godejohn were arrested in Wisconsin the following day, June 15, 2015. Authorities were stunned to find that Gypsy could walk without assistance and appeared to be in good health [6].
The revelation of Dee Dee's abuse transformed the case from a straightforward murder investigation into a national conversation about medical child abuse. In July 2016, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison as part of a plea agreement that took into account the severe abuse she had endured [1][3]. Godejohn went to trial in November 2018. His defense attorneys argued that his autism spectrum disorder prevented him from distinguishing fantasy from reality, but the jury deliberated for approximately two hours before finding him guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus a concurrent 25-year sentence for armed criminal action [1][5].
The case attracted extensive media attention and inspired multiple adaptations. HBO released the documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest" in 2017. In 2019, Hulu premiered the eight-episode limited series "The Act," based on a BuzzFeed News article by journalist Michelle Dean, starring Joey King as Gypsy and Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee [2][7]. Arquette won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Dee Dee Blanchard [3].
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released on parole from the Chillicothe Correctional Center on December 28, 2023, having served approximately eight years -- roughly 85 percent of her original sentence [4][8]. Her release generated a wave of public attention, with Gypsy quickly amassing millions of social media followers. In her first interview after release, she told CNN, "I'm finally free" [8]. Her parole supervision was expected to continue through June 2025 [8].
On June 15, 2015, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn were arrested in Big Bend, Wisconsin, in connection with the murder of Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, whose body had been discovered the previous day in her Springfield, Missouri home [1][2]. Both were initially charged with first-degree murder in Greene County, Missouri [2]. Court documents stated that Godejohn "stabbed Dee Dee Blancharde to death at Gypsy's request, using a knife she gave him" [2].
On July 5, 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors [1][3]. The plea deal took into account the extensive abuse she had suffered under her mother's care, including years of unnecessary medical procedures, physical confinement, and psychological manipulation associated with Munchausen syndrome by proxy [3][4]. She was sentenced to 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections [1][3].
Godejohn's case went to trial in Greene County in November 2018. During the four-day trial, his defense attorneys did not dispute that Godejohn had committed the killing but argued that his autism spectrum disorder impaired his ability to distinguish fantasy from reality and therefore negated the element of deliberation required for first-degree murder [5]. The prosecution countered that the murder had been planned approximately a year in advance and that Godejohn had traveled over 500 miles from Wisconsin to carry it out, demonstrating clear premeditation [5]. A jury of nine women and six men deliberated for approximately two hours before returning a verdict of guilty on the charge of first-degree murder [5]. Godejohn was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus a concurrent 25-year sentence for armed criminal action [1][5]. His appeal for a new trial was denied [3].
Blanchard became eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of her sentence. She was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center on December 28, 2023, at approximately 3:30 a.m., having served roughly eight years of her 10-year sentence [4][6]. Her parole conditions included supervision expected to continue through June 2025 [6].
