FTX co-founder, CTO, and key cooperating witness
Profile
Gary Wang co-founded FTX alongside Sam Bankman-Fried in 2019 and served as the exchange's chief technology officer.[1] A graduate of MIT, Wang built much of FTX's core trading infrastructure and was responsible for the code that allowed Alameda Research to borrow billions in customer funds from FTX without proper safeguards.[1][2]
After FTX collapsed in November 2022, Wang was the first of Bankman-Fried's inner circle to cooperate with federal prosecutors.[2] Judge Lewis Kaplan praised him for being "the first FTX cooperator to come in the door," and his testimony was instrumental in securing Bankman-Fried's conviction on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy.[2] In November 2024, Wang was sentenced to no prison time in recognition of his extraordinary cooperation, receiving three years of supervised release instead.[3]
