Accomplice in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart
Profile
Wanda Eileen Barzee was born on November 6, 1945, in Salt Lake City, Utah. A divorcee with six children from a previous marriage, she met Brian David Mitchell in the late 1980s, and the two married in 1985. Under Mitchell's influence, Barzee became deeply immersed in his extreme religious ideology, adopting his belief that he was a divinely appointed prophet with a mandate to take multiple wives. Together they lived as itinerant street preachers in the Salt Lake City area. [1]
On June 5, 2002, Barzee aided Mitchell in the kidnapping of fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom. During the nine months Smart was held captive at a remote campsite in the Wasatch Mountains and at other locations, Barzee played an active and cruel role. According to Smart's testimony, Barzee encouraged Mitchell during sexual assaults and treated Smart as a "handmaiden" and slave. Smart later recalled that Barzee would sit beside her and urge her husband to continue the abuse.
After Smart's rescue in March 2003, Barzee was arrested and charged with federal and state kidnapping crimes. The legal proceedings were complicated by questions about Barzee's mental competency. She was eventually diagnosed with several psychological disorders. In 2010, Barzee pleaded guilty to federal kidnapping charges and unlawful transportation of a minor and was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison. [3]
Barzee was released from Draper Prison in Utah on September 19, 2018, after the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole determined that time served in federal custody should count toward her state sentence. Her early release alarmed Elizabeth Smart, who publicly questioned Barzee's mental fitness and expressed concern about public safety. Upon release, Barzee was required to register as a sex offender and remain under supervised probation for five years with no contact with the Smart family. [4]
In May 2025, Barzee was arrested in Salt Lake City for allegedly violating sex-offender registration conditions by entering public parks from which she was barred. She reportedly told officers she had visited the parks because she was "commanded to by the Lord," raising renewed concerns about her mental state and her continued adherence to the religious delusions she shared with Mitchell.
